Day 364: 12/31/13- Bad Movie Night and Yesterday's Tree Climb

Day 364: 12/31/13- Bad Movie Night and Yesterday's Tree Climb
New Thing: Bad Movie Night and Yesterday's Tree Climb
Inspiration: A cool tree in Valley Forge Park, Fireproof, Travis, Trish, Ken
Time: Several hours
Bottom Line: Good times will be had by all.

Reflection: I forgot to mention in yesterday's post that I found a really great climbing tree yesterday on my run in Valley Forge Park. I climbed pretty far and had an excellent view. Noteworthy enough to get a mention.

For today's new thing, we are having a New Year's Even celebration with our friend's Travis and Trish. We will be viewing (and riffing on) Fireproof for a revival of our "bad movie night." This delightful tradition (which was started before Ken and I were married) is where we watch bad movies and, well, make fun of them. I have never actually seen Fireproof, but it has the most important quality for a bad movie candidate: it takes itself really seriously and thus becomes unintentionally funny.  Perfect way to spend New Year's Eve!

Reflection: Today is St. Lucy's day! Traditionally on this day, the oldest girl of the household dresses in white and red with a wreath of candles on her head and brings cinnamon rolls to everyone. I kind of did that for the office (see above) but I used a lantern instead of lighting my head on fire.

D. also had her sweet winter play today! Adorable!

L. was making a break for it, but the rest of us were laughing our heads off!

Reflection: Today is the Feast of St. Michael and all Angels also known as Michaelmas. I traveled back to my hometown of Tunkhannock to visit with my dear friend Sarah and her lovely boys L. and K who were visiting the state from Colorado where they live. I cannot tell you how good it was for my soul to talk with one of my oldest friends about faith, motherhood, and life in general. It was like we had never been apart. I love you Sarah!

The Howland Preserve

After that we headed over to the Howland Preserve which is situated on the almost halfway mark of the Susquehanna River. Ali and Doug are planning on making a home there as well as keeping the preserve open for groups and for an ecological sanctuary. What a beautiful place! It was a perfect day to offer prayers and blessing!

Bottom Line: “The laziest man I ever met put popcorn in his pancakes so they would turn over by themselves.” -W.C. Fields

Reflection: September is "Better Breakfast Month." Sure. So, I decided to try making a pop corn breakfast. I just pop the corn in the microwave and used honey and milk to eat it like cereal like they used to do in olden times. If you would like to read how to do this in a more official way, you can read all about it here. It was pretty good!

Day 238: 8/26/13- Women's Equality Day

Day 238: 8/26/13-  Women's Equality Day
New Thing: Read the Presidential Equality Proclamation
Inspiration: Women's Equality Day
Time: A few mins.
Bottom Line: Votes for Women!!

Reflection: Today is Women's Equality Day! Here is the wiki description:

Women's Equality Day is a day proclaimed each year by the United States President to commemorate the granting of the vote to women throughout the country on an equal basis with men. Women in the United States were granted the right to vote on August 26, 1920, when the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was certified. The amendment was first introduced many years earlier in 1878. Every president has published a proclamation for Women's Equality Day since 1971 when legislation was first introduced in Congress by Bella Abzug. This resolution was passed designating August 26 of each year as Women's Equality Day.

So, today, in honor of all those brave women who fought for the right to vote, I proudly read the President's Proclamation. Here it is:

Presidential Proclamation -- Women's Equality Day, 2013

WOMEN'S EQUALITY DAY, 2013
- - - - - - -
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
On August 26, 1920, after decades of organizing, agitating, and demonstrating, our country achieved a major victory for women's rights and American democracy. The 19th Amendment was certified, extending the vote to women and advancing our Nation's long journey toward full equality for all Americans. The ratification of the 19th Amendment paved the way for more women to participate in American politics -- as leaders, candidates, voters, and volunteers. Today, women make up the majority of the electorate, and last year a record number of women were elected to the United States Congress. On Women's Equality Day, we celebrate the progress that has been made, and renew our commitment to securing equal rights, freedoms, and opportunities for women everywhere.

From the beginning, my Administration has been committed to advancing the historic march toward gender equality. We have fought for equal pay, prohibited gender discrimination in America's healthcare system, and established the White House Council on Women and Girls, which works to ensure fair treatment in all matters of public policy. In March, I signed a reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which provides better tools to law enforcement to reduce domestic and sexual violence, strengthens support systems, and extends protections to even more women. And earlier this year, the Department of Defense announced plans to remove roadblocks that prevent women from serving the country they love at the highest levels their extraordinary valor and talent will take them.

Yet we have more work to do. A fair deal for women is essential to a thriving middle class, but while women graduate college at higher rates than men, they still make less money after graduation and often have fewer opportunities to enter well-paid occupations or receive promotions. On average, women are paid 77 cents for every dollar paid to men. That is why the first bill I signed was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. It is also why I established the National Equal Pay Task Force, which is cracking down on equal pay violations at a record rate. And it is why I issued a Presidential Memorandum calling for a Government-wide strategy to close any gender pay gap within the Federal workforce. To build on this work, I will continue to urge the Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act, a bill that would strengthen the Equal Pay Act and give women more tools to challenge unequal wages. My Administration will also continue our campaign to engage women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers, and we will broaden our efforts to empower women and girls around the world.

As we reflect with pride on decades of progress toward gender equality, we must also resolve to make progress in our time. Today, we honor the pioneers of women's equality by doing our part to realize that great American dream -- the dream of a Nation where all things are possible for all people.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim August 26, 2013, as Women's Equality Day. I call upon the people of the United States to celebrate the achievements of women and promote gender equality in our country.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-third day of August, in the year of our Lord two thousand thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-eighth.

Day 218: 8/6/13- The Feast of the Transfiguration

Day 218: 8/6/13- The Feast of the Transfiguration
New Thing- Celtic Transfiguration
Inspiration: The Feast of the Transfiguration
Time: All Day

Bottom Line: Transfigured

Reflection:  Today is the Feast of the Transfiguration- one of my favorites! Here is the wiki description:

The Transfiguration of Jesus is an episode in the New Testament narrative in which Jesus is transfigured (or metamorphosed) and becomes radiant upon a mountain. The Synoptic Gospels (Matthew 17:1–9, Mark 9:2-8, Luke 9:28–36) describe it, and 2 Peter 1:16–18 refers to it. In these accounts, Jesus and three of his apostles go to a mountain (the Mount of Transfiguration). On the mountain, Jesus begins to shine with bright rays of light. Then the prophets Moses and Elijah appear next to him and he speaks with them. Jesus is then called "Son" by a voice in the sky, assumed to be God the Father, as in the Baptism of Jesus. The Transfiguration is one of the miracles of Jesus in the Gospels. This miracle is unique among others that appear in the Canonical gospels, in that the miracle happens to Jesus himself. Thomas Aquinas considered the Transfiguration "the greatest miracle" in that it complemented baptism and showed the perfection of life in Heaven. The Transfiguration is one of the five major milestones in the gospel narrative of the life of Jesus, the others being Baptism, Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension. In Christian teachings, the Transfiguration is a pivotal moment, and the setting on the mountain is presented as the point where human nature meets God: the meeting place for the temporal and the eternal, with Jesus himself as the connecting point, acting as the bridge between heaven and earth.

Trinity Tattoo

Since Jesus himself is miraculously transfigured in his body and appearance, I decided to try a new twist on my tradition to "transfigure" myself on this feast day (see this post from two years ago) by using a different kind of temporary tattoo ink. This ink works like henna, but comes out black and I found it easier to work with. I chose a Celtic trinity knot design since I am Irish and put it on my arm where I could see it for the two weeks the directions tell me it will be with me. When I look at it, I will ask the Trinity to transform my heart into one of peace and joy alone.

Day 213: 8/1/13- Gluten Free Bread for First Loaves Day

Day 213: 8/1/13- Gluten Free Bread for First Loaves Day
New Thing- Make Gluten Free Bread
Inspiration: First Loaves Day
Time: About an hour

Bottom Line: There is a tradition that goes back to pre-Christian Anglo-Saxon Briton that the first day of August is the day that the first loaf of bread of the new wheat harvest is made. Once Christianity came to the British Isles, people would bring their bread to church for a blessing. So, today, I made a new kind of bread--gluten free. It was very good.

Day 203: 7/22/13- The Feast of St. Mary Magdalene on the Beach

Day 203: 7/22/13- The Feast of St. Mary Magdalene on the Beach
New Thing- DIY Green-Tea Mist on the Beach
Inspiration: Longport, St. Mary Magdalene
Time: A few seconds to make and hours of enjoyment
Bottom Line: Refreshing

Mary covered in her trademark red curly hair- the mark of a prostitute. Yes, I chose the weirdest picture I could find!
Reflection: Today is the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene who is known as the Myrrh bearer because she is traditionally described as one who annointed Our Lord's feet with ointment from an alabaster box and then wiped His feet with her hair (John 11:1-45, c.f. Luke 7:36-50) and that she anointed them again (with ointment made of spikenard, kept in an alabaster box) in Bethany, just before the Last Supper, an act about which Our Lord said, "...she is come beforehand to anoint my body for burial. Amen, I say to you, wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, that also which she hath done, shall be told for a memorial of her." (Matthew 26:6-13, Mark 14:1-9, John 12:1-8) Also because she, the "other Mary," and Salome went to annoint Our Lord's Body on the morning of the Resurrection, found the tomb empty, and met the risen Christ Who said to her, "Do not touch me ("Noli me tangere"), for I am not yet ascended to my Father. But go to My brethren, and say to them: I ascend to My Father and to your Father, to My God and your God. " This mission given to her by Christ thereby made her an "Apostle to the Apostles." (Matthew 28:1-10, Mark 16:1-11, Luke 24:1-10, John 20:1-18)

Thus, one of the traditions associated with Mary's Feast is to make fragrant ointments which I tried to do, but the local natural food store didn't have what I needed. So, moving on to Plan B, I made something as equally good for the skin: green tea cooling spray.

Here are the details found here:
DIY Green Tea mist for beach + pool
  • 1-2 green tea bags
  • 1-2 cups cold, cold water
  • steep green tea in cold water for 2 hours
  • add ice
  • put in spray bottle
  • keep cool
This DIY mist will do a few great things:
  • spray antioxidants straight onto your face, take that oxidants!
  • cool you off
  • refresh you
  • repair sun damage
  • make you look smart
D. and I loved this on the beach! Definitely a win.

Day 166: 6/15/13- Early Father's Day Chocolate Chip Crepes
New Thing- Make Ken Chocolate Chip Crepes
Inspiration: Father's Day, Ken
Time: About 30 mins.
Bottom Line: Tasty way to celebrate the wonderful father of our child!!

The lighting in this pic is really weird, so don't think that they were burnt.
Reflection: Today is not Father's Day, but since I will be working all day tomorrow, D. and I made Ken breakfast in bed today. I made him chocolate-chip crepes for the first time and he seemed to like them. His tray was topped off with fresh flowers and lilac from our garden and coffee just the way he likes it. I love you, Ken!!
