Day 272: 9/30/13- Michaelmas House Blessing and Visit with Old Friends

Day 272: 9/30/13- Michaelmas House Blessing and Visit with Old Friends
New Thing: Sarah Visit and Howland Preserve Blessing
Inspiration: Sarah, Ali, Doug and St. Michael
Time: All day
Bottom Line: What a blessed day!

L. was making a break for it, but the rest of us were laughing our heads off!

Reflection: Today is the Feast of St. Michael and all Angels also known as Michaelmas. I traveled back to my hometown of Tunkhannock to visit with my dear friend Sarah and her lovely boys L. and K who were visiting the state from Colorado where they live. I cannot tell you how good it was for my soul to talk with one of my oldest friends about faith, motherhood, and life in general. It was like we had never been apart. I love you Sarah!

The Howland Preserve

After that we headed over to the Howland Preserve which is situated on the almost halfway mark of the Susquehanna River. Ali and Doug are planning on making a home there as well as keeping the preserve open for groups and for an ecological sanctuary. What a beautiful place! It was a perfect day to offer prayers and blessing!

Day 271: 9/29/13- Praying upside down

Day 271: 9/29/13- Praying upside down
New Thing: Praying upside down
Inspiration: Prayer
Time: A few mins.
Bottom Line: Seeing the world upside down.

Reflection: Doing head stands in yoga has made me think about seeing the world from a different angle. Tonight, I took that though into my prayer time by hanging off the side of my bed upside down. It was oddly familiar like I had done it before but maybe that was a link to the past. I was able to pray pretty effectively before the blood rush to much to my head, but it was very relaxing.

Day 270: 9/28/13- Philly Grim Tour

Day 270: 9/28/13- Philly Grim Tour
New Thing: Philly Grim Tour
Inspiration: Ken's Birthday
Time: Several Hours
Bottom Line: Not your average history tour.

The Cemetery at Christ Church
Reflection: To continue the Ken's birthday week celebration, I surprised him with tickets to a historical walking tour in Philly. But this wasn't just any walking tour, this was a Grim Philly tour. Here are the details:

Cemetery, Serial Killers; Blood & Beer!
From the burial ground to the bar! Eat, drink, & be merry! From grave robbers like Dutch Pillet and Levi Chew to psychopathic killers like the “Corpse Collector,” “Frankfort Slasher,” “Hednik’s House of Horrors,” and H.H. Holmes; America’s first- this is not your typical Liberty Bell tour! And…after a fact-packed late afternoon Grim Philly® walk we’ll rest our weary bones at Mexican Post Tavern for beer and snacks just in time for dinner before leaving on our (optional) "Bootleggers Ball Historic & Haunted Pub Crawl!" Sparsely sprinkled with national icons, tales of yellow fever death, & up close visits to the graves of Ben Franklin, & other founding fathers- this tour tells more of the modern; gritty…some would say “twisted” side of our history.

Our tour guide was a PhD in history from Temple and the whole thing was a fascinating look at the urban history of Philadelphia. It's the stuff that the don't put in history books. Totally recommend it!

New Thing: Lunch at the historical Valley Green Inn and Bless dear Callie and Baby
Inspiration: Callie
Time: A few wonderful hours
Bottom Line: Blessed and delicious

Reflection: I had a delightful lunch today sitting by the stream on the pouch of the historic Valley Green Inn with the always wonderful Callie. It was one of those perfect early fall days when you just want to enjoy your yummy soup, salad and sandwich with you friend who is so easy to talk to--and I was able to do all that!

But the best part of the day was when Callie did me the honor of asking for a blessing for her and the child she is carrying. It was such a lovely moment between friends and God. Thank you for that day, Callie!!

Day 266: 9/24/13- Sidewinder Ponytail

Day 266: 9/24/13- Sidewinder Ponytail
New Thing: Sidewinder Ponytail
Inspiration: Real Simple
Time: A few minuets
Bottom Line: Classy side do

Reflection: I don't know if you can tell, but what makes this style unique is that I have looped hair around the base of the ponytail to dress it up even more. This was a good style for wavy hair like mine!

Day 265: 9/23/13- Shampoo-Free

Day 265: 9/23/13- Shampoo-Free

Time: A few minuets
Bottom Line: Not bad!

Reflection: I have been meaning to try this method (found here) for a while. It seemed to work pretty well and I though I was worried that my hair would smell like apple cider vinegar it really didn't. Way less chemicals!

Day 264: 9/22/13- Popcorn Breakfast

Day 264: 9/22/13- Popcorn Breakfast
New Thing: Popcorn Breakfast
Inspiration: Better Breakfast Month
Time: A few minuets
Bottom Line: “The laziest man I ever met put popcorn in his pancakes so they would turn over by themselves.” -W.C. Fields

Reflection: September is "Better Breakfast Month." Sure. So, I decided to try making a pop corn breakfast. I just pop the corn in the microwave and used honey and milk to eat it like cereal like they used to do in olden times. If you would like to read how to do this in a more official way, you can read all about it here. It was pretty good!

New Thing: Yoga Training Class & DJARM18's Homemade Root Beer
Inspiration: Amy, Yoga and Andrew
Time: All day
Bottom Line: Awesome day!

Reflection: Today was the second part of our first yoga training section which was so amazing. We started by talking about the philosophy of non-violence and then went through a practice. Finally, we spent time working through the sun-salutations and learning how to give adjustments with partners. It was both physically fun and emotionally and intellectually stimulating.

Later, we went up to Bethlehem to see some of our best friends and sample Andrew's homemade root beer! Delicious!

Day 261: 9/19/13- Watch "Doctor Who"

Day 261: 9/19/13- Watch Doctor Who
New Thing: Watch Doctor Who
Inspiration: Tons of friends who watch it
Time: About 45 mins.
Bottom Line: "Pleased to meet you Rose, now run for your life."

Reflection: As I mentioned on facebook the other day (which made for some sweet and funny comments back), I had a parishioner tell me that she was sure I was a "Time Lord" after a Bible study class. Now knowing that this was (1.) a complement and (2.) a Doctor Who reference, I made up my mind to watch it. I have to say, even though this was only the first episode of the new stuff and the graphics are kind of dated, I can totally tell that this is the kind of show that builds on itself and rewards the followers. I may be hooked. Only time will tell (pun intended).

Day 260: 9/18/13- Coffee Shop Invitation Ministry

Day 260: 9/18/13- Coffee Shop Invitation Ministry
New Thing: Coffee Shop Invitation Ministry
Inspiration: "Zombie Church" Video & Prayer
Time: An hour and a half
Bottom Line: Coffee and Convo.

My table accoutrements
Reflection: A few weeks ago, an online video made by Scott Gunn of Forward Movement called "Zombie Churches" was making the rounds on many of my clergy friend's facebook pages. Here is the link. The video gave a pretty clear description of the difference between what a dying/dead church looks like verses a vibrant and alive one.

While I am happy to say that St. David's has many of the markers of an "alive" church, I was still convicted on a few of his points. Most notably the idea that in a zombie church, clergy spend most of their time caring for their members only and not for people who are outside the parish rolls. I would say that much of my ministry could fall into that latter category. So, I took it to God in prayer asking Him how he thought I could be more willing to take care of all his people and not just the ones who are easily within reach.

Well, God answered. Like right away. That almost never happens. I suddenly had an answer of, "spend at least an hour or two at the local Starbucks being open for any conversation that comes your way."

So, today I started living out that call and went to Starbucks with the above little sign and my most inviting smile.

I certainly got a lot of weird looks and polite "oh, I really wasn't trying to make eye contact with you, crazy person, so I am now going to look away" kind of facial gestures. But I also had an amazing conversation with a traveler who was many states away from his home and looking for encouragement. He also told me about what his church was doing in Discipleship (which is exactly what I am working on right now!). There were a few other shorter conversations, but I spent the rest of the time praying for the people around me hoping that God would be with them that day. I have to say, I think I am really going to like this!

Day 259: 9/17/13- Court Tennis & Yoga Teacher Training

Day 259: 9/17/13- Court Tennis & Yoga Teacher Training
New Thing: Visit a Court Tennis Court and Start Yoga Teacher Training
Inspiration: Frank, Matt and Amy
Time: Several hours over the day
Bottom Line: Sports, culture and mysticism combine

Reflection: I had a great day today! After staff meeting, we headed down to see Matt give a great speech for the Episcopal Club at The Historic Racquet Club of Philadelphia. He did a great job! Following that, we went upstairs to see the "Court Tennis" courts which were really cool. Here is the description from the website:

COURT TENNIS
What the British call "tennis" (also known to them as real tennis or royal tennis) is labeled "court tennis" in the United States. Virtually unknown in this country, court tennis is played by approximately one thousand men and women on only ten courts. Court tennis was the game of Napoleon, Henry VIII, and many other European monarchs; it was played in the Louvre and at Versailles, and is mentioned in literature more than any other sport. Like lawn tennis, court tennis is played by two contestants (four in doubles) with racquets and balls on a court divided by a sagging net, and the scoring is virtually the same in the two games. The court is an indoor, four-walled structure of concrete. There are numerous openings in the walls, and a "penthouse" (or roofed shed) which runs along one sidewall and both end walls.

We didn't actually get to play a game, but I really hope to since it was very cool!

In the evening, I started one of my life's goals, yoga teacher training! This is a 200 hour certification and I am so thrilled to be starting this journey. Not only do I hope that my personal practice will grow, but I hope to help others learn how to pray in this style that I have grown to love. Also, Amy is an awesome teacher! You will be hearing alot more about all this in the months to come.

Hill with the Ushers
Reflection: At St. David's this morning, we had a Welcoming Workshop inspired by the work of Mary Parmer, an expert in the field of invitation, welcoming and connection in churches. It was great and a huge "thank you" goes out to all those listed above who lead our ministries in these areas.

Day 255: 9/12/13- Yoga Anatomy DVD

Day 255: 9/12/13- Yoga Anatomy DVD
New Thing: Watch the first section of Yoga Anatomy with Davie Keli
Inspiration: Amy, Davie Keli, Yoga Teacher Training
Time: About an hour
Bottom Line: Already totally into this even though a lot of this went over my head.

Reflection: Next week, I start one of my life's goal of yoga teacher training with my friend and teacher Amy! My first homework assignment was to watch a section of David Keli's (Amy's teacher) Yoga Anatomy DVD. It was fascinating and it already has me thinking about how the physical and the spiritual are linked even though there are so many voices that stress more of a pluralism--as though we could concentrate on one part of ourselves and not the other. I think the same could be said about theology. There are many people out there who want to talk about Jesus in either his divine nature or just his human nature--as though he is half God and half man. But, what we are always called to remember that he is fully human and fully divine at the same time. That is the joy and mystery of the incarnation. It is always full and complete, never anything less.

Day 254: 9/11/13- Jar up the honey!

Day 254: 9/11/13- Jar up the honey!
New Thing: Jar up the year's honey
Inspiration: Cindy, Jeff, Amy and the bees!
Time: An hour
Bottom Line: I feel like Winnie the pooh.

Reflection: Today, we all got together to jar up the honey at Cindy's and Jeff's. They had those cool honey bears that we managed to fill without out a spill. They looked so delicious sitting in rows. I can't wait to dig in!

Day 253: 9/10/13- Become the Clergy Spuport for Discipleship at St. David's

Day 253: 9/10/13- Become the Clergy Support for Discipleship at St. David's     New Thing: Become the Clergy Support for Discipleship at St. David's
Inspiration: Tom, St. David's
Time: One Meeting
Bottom Line: Feeling blessed but also bittersweet.

Reflection: Today, it was officially announced that I would be taking over the Discipleship Committee with the departure of Fr. Tom. While I am overjoyed to be working with such a great group of people and exited about the ministry we will share, I am also feeling the sadness that come with the reality that it means that Tom will be moving on to another church. I am thrilled for them, and happy that they will be blessed by his many gifts, but still...its bittersweet.

Day 252: 9/9/13- Take a Virtual Pilgrimage to the World's Largest Cave

Day 252: 9/9/13- Take a Virtual Pilgrimage to the World's Largest Cave
New Thing: Take a virtual pilgrimage to the world's largest cave
Inspiration: Friend's facebook page
Time: A few mins.
Bottom Line: I want to go to there.

Reflection: Do yourself a favor and read this post/watch this video from the Huffington Post, of the recently found world's largest cave, The Son Doong Cave in Vietnam. Here is the description:

The Son Doong Cave in Vietnam is the biggest cave in the world. It's over 5.5 miles long, has a jungle and river, and could fit a 40-story skyscraper within its walls. But nobody knew any of that until four years ago. The newly discovered cave has been touted as the largest in the world, although other caves vie for the title of longest (Mammoth Cave in Brownsville, Kentucky nabs that title with about 400 miles of passageways) and deepest (Krubera Cave in the nation of Georgia).

I have been to Mammoth Cave and was just amazed. But the thing about this cave that almost had me in tears was the rain-forest that it has inside. And we just found this thing! Just watch it and try not to be awe-struck. God is so cool!

Day 251: 9/8/13- St. David's Kick-Off Picnic

Day 251: 9/8/13- St. David's Kick-Off Picnic
New Thing: St. David's Kick-Off Picnic
Inspiration: St. David's
Time: Several Hours
Bottom Line: The year of grace has started!

With photo thanks to Eileen!
Reflection: Today was the kick-off picnic for the program year at St. David's! It was such great energy to have everyone back and the picnic was a hit. Live pigs for the prodigal son story in the Sunday School rotation, a moon bounce, auction preview and sale, and the men's talented grilling. What more could you ask for?!

Day 250: 9/7/13- Feed a Giraffe at the Elmwood Park Zoo

Day 250: 9/7/13- Feed a Giraffe at the Elmwood Park Zoo
New Thing: Elmwood Park Zoo
Inspiration: Ken
Time: Several Hours
Bottom Line: People say that it's all happening at the zoo. I do believe that is true.

We had an instant bond--or at least she did with the lettuce I was offering her.

Reflection: So, my wonderful husband stopped me at the door as I walk in from officiating a funeral to tell me that as soon as I changed out of my clericals, we were all going to go out for a surprise. We all got into the car and, to our delight, arrived at the Elmwood Park for the first time ever! How cool is Ken?!

It is a really sweet zoo with alot of great learning and animals. But the highlight was getting to feed and pet the giraffes. They were so sweet and have these soft cow-like eyes. Great moment.

Day 249: 9/6/13- Honey Harvest!

Day 249: 9/6/13- Honey Harvest!
New Thing: Harvest Honey
Inspiration: Beekeeping
Time: Several Hours
Bottom Line: Sweet!

Reflection: Today was the honey harvest day! It was a pretty amazing process from start to
finish. To begin with, we took the frames with the capped honey from the hives while making sure that they would still have plenty left over for the winter. I received my first sting of the season when one of the ladies got into my suit. They were not pleased. From there, we took all the frames to my patio, uncapped them and put them in the extractor which spins the frames until the honey is drawn out. We then strain it and enjoy the sweetness. It was amazing!!

All the equipment at the end. The bees will come and clean up all the excess honey. How awesome is it that they will even do the clean up?!

Day 248: 9/5/13- New App for Interpreting and Meditating on Christian Art

Day 248: 9/5/13- New App for Interpreting and Meditating on Christian Art
New Thing: art/y/fact.Xn
Inspiration: The eFormation Conference
Time: About 20 mins.
Bottom Line: Good stuff.

"The Last Supper" Nikolai Ge 1863
Reflection:I decided to try out a new app for my evening meditation tonight called "art/y/fact.Xn. Here is the app. description:

art/y/fact.Xn is a tool for interpreting and meditating with Christian art. What is the difference between one painting of the Crucifixion and another? Users will be able to figure this out for themselves with the aid of this app. Christian artworks are found in museums, churches, books, magazines and web sites but often users are at a loss to understand the rich meanings of these works. The app offers interpretive tools for artworks about Jesus, Mary, other figures and stories from the Bible, Saints, Angels and Demons. The 100+ articles about themes common in Christian art include Basic Info, a list of What to Look For, and questions that guide General, Personal, and Historical Interpretations of the artworks. In addition, the app provides tools from the worlds of art, history, and theology to help the user dig deeper into the meaning of an artwork. Because a user sometimes wants an inner experience of Christian art, the app also contains six audio meditations. The user selects an artwork to meditate with, plugs in their earbuds, and chooses a meditation that connects to their experience of the artwork chosen. The app is for Christians and anyone else who wants a richer experience of Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque art, or the Christian art of any other period.

I was pretty impressed with the the app once I figured out how to use it. I chose to meditate on the above panting of the Last Supper and listened to the guided meditation to help the Spirit show me things that I might not have seen by only looking at it with my eyes instead of gazing on it with my heart.

The first thing that stuck me was how dark and disfigured Judas was as Jesus seems heavy with the weight of the moment. Secondly, I noticed that there was a disciple in the background that seems to have fainted. I wondered why. Then I noticed the bowl, towel and jar that Jesus must have used to wash the disciples feet--a tender moment between them all now over. It lasted a while and was very dramatic. All that without even touching the interpretation feature of the app! I imagine that using this with the actual painting in front of you would be even better.

Day 247: 9/4/13- Irish Salad

Day 247: 9/4/13- Irish Salad
New Thing: Irish Salad
Inspiration: Rick
Time: A delightful hour
Bottom Line: So good!

Reflection: Today, I spent a delightful day in Bethlehem visiting with some of my favorite people in the world! One of those people was Rick who took me out to Granny McCarthy's Tea Room and we both had an Irish salad which had a poached egg and ham on it.  It was delicious as was the conversation. Thank you all for being such amazing lights in my life!

Day 246: 9/3/13- Morning Pages

Day 246: 9/3/13- Morning Pages
New Thing: Morning Pages
Inspiration: The Artist's Way, Women's Bible Study
Time: Hal an Hour
Bottom Line: "It's like taking out your shadow side to get morning coffee."

Reflection: Several months ago, the women in our Thursday Morning Bible Study recommended a spiritual tool called The Artist's Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity by Julia Cameron. This workbook is filled with techniques and meditations to help take a person deeper into their true self. The first step of every exercise is called "Morning Pages." Here is the description of morning pages taken from Cameron's website where you can also watch a video about it:

The bedrock tool of a creative recovery is a daily practice called Morning Pages. Morning Pages are three pages of longhand, stream of consciousness writing, done first thing in the morning. *There is no wrong way to do Morning Pages*–they are not high art. They are not even “writing.” They are about anything and everything that crosses your mind– and they are for your eyes only. Morning Pages provoke, clarify, comfort, cajole, prioritize and synchronize the day at hand. Do not over-think Morning Pages: just put three pages of anything on the page…and then do three more pages tomorrow.

The idea is to give your subconscious a chance to be "vacuumed" out to let you then be free to create. I found it to be a very effective way to start my prayer time because once I wrote something out, I was much less like to be distracted. It also had the unexpected benefit of inviting prayer into my "planning the day" routine I do which made the stress that is normally present in that planning time much less.

Day 245: 9/2/13- Living the Proverbs Week: Day Seven

Day 245: 9/2/13- Living the Proverbs Week: Day Seven
New Thing: Banish Sloth Today!
Inspiration: Women's Bible Study
Time: All Day
Bottom Line: Proverbs 19:15 “Laziness cast into a deep sleep, and an idle man will suffer hunger.”

Reflection: Today is the last day in our Proverbs week and our goal today will be to banish laziness.
Day Seven: Banish Sloth Today!
Proverbs 19:15 “Laziness cast into a deep sleep, and an idle man will suffer hunger.”
Proverbs 15:19 “The way of the lazy is as a hedge of thorns, but the path of the upright is a highway.”
Suggested ways to live this out—
Prayer: Again, pray the prayer from the first day to help dedicate your day to service to our Lord. Look at your calendar and add at least three prayer times today (even if they are just for 5 mins. at a time) to be diligently keeping spiritual laziness away.
Mediation: Be busy is not the same thing as being active for God. Don’t mistake the to, after all, if you are to busy to pray you are busier then God created you to be.
Activity: “Think of a daunting project or an unpleasant task you would prefer to avoid. Break the job down into small tasks you can accomplish in one day or less and write those tasks on a calendar. Post the calendar where others can see your plan and view your progress. Trust me: this accountability will help.” Charles R. Swindoll

So, it should be pretty obvious which task I chose to tackle today. I was about 22 days behind on this blog. 22 days!! That was pretty daunting. As you have heard me say before, I love this exercise, but the blog can be tough. Yet, without the blog, I am less motivated to keep on task. Thus, getting behind can feel hard since there is just that much more to do. So, today was the day to not be idle any more! I wrote all 22 entries and am feeling much less unpleasantness! Huzzah!

Day 244: 9/1/13- Living the Proverbs Week: Day Six

Day 244: 9/1/13- Living the Proverbs Week: Day Six
New Thing: Sabbath Wisdom
Inspiration: Women's Bible Study
Time: All Day
Bottom Line: Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Day Six: Sabbath Wisdom
Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
Suggested ways to life this out—

Action: Go to church

Prayer: Use this prayer from the BCP: For Guidance: O God, by whom the meek are guided in judgment, and light rises up in darkness for the godly: Grant us, in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what you would have us to do, that the Spirit of wisdom may save us from all false choices, and that in your light we may see light, and in your straight path may not stumble; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Journal Meditation: Based on all that God has shown you, explain your understanding of the difference between knowledge and wisdom.

For my personal exercise, I decided to do the journaling option listed above, although I did not come to an end since there was much to write, apparently. But, I also went back to church for the evening service which was not one I was scheduled to be at. It was so nice just sitting in the pews with friends and listening to Frank preach on this, his first Sunday back. The beauty of a Sabbath evening.
