Day 211: 7/30/13- All the President's Men

Day 211: 7/30/13- All the President's Men
New Thing- Watch All the President's Men
Inspiration: Ken
Time: Almost two hours
Bottom Line: Follow the money.

Reflection: Another classic film that I have never seen. Ken and I watched All the President's Men tonight and it is just astounding to think about this time in American history. And to think, it all almost went undetected. Its journalism like this that just does not happen any more.

Day 210: 7/29/13- Ancient Sermon on the Feast of Mary and Martha of Bethany

Day 210: 7/29/13- Ancient Sermon on the Feast of Mary and Martha of Bethany
New Thing- Read Augustine's Sermon about Mary & Martha
Inspiration: The Feast of Mary and Martha of Bethany
Time: A few mins.
Bottom Line:
"The things which were made, are many, He who made them is One." - St. Augustine

Reflection: Today is the Feast of Mary and her sister Martha of Bethany. In honor of their feast, I read a sermon written another saint, St. Augustine of Hippo (Early Church Father and Doctor of the Church). You can find different versions of sermons he wrote on Luke 10:38-42 here and here. Here is my favorite part:

But a wicked life was far from that house, and was neither with Martha nor with Mary; and if it ever had been, it fled at the Lord's entrance. There remained then in that house, which had received the Lord, in the two women the two lives, both harmless, both praiseworthy; the one of labour, the other of ease; neither vicious, neither slothful. Both harmless, both, I say, praiseworthy: but one of labour, the other of ease: neither vicious, which the life of labour must beware of; neither slothful, which the life of ease must beware of. There were then in that house these two lives, and Himself, the Fountain of life. In Martha was the image of things present, in Mary of things to come. What Martha was doing, that we are now; what Mary was doing, that we hope for. Let us do the first well, that we may have the second fully.

In this section, Augustine is showing us how, while both women were being attentive to the Lord, Martha was focusing on things temporal and Mary was dwelling on things eternal. The question becomes, how do we lead a life that is active for God and yet spends time resting in his presence?

More prayer. The answer always seems to be more prayer. ;)

Day 208: 7/27/13- Spy The Exhibit: The Secret World of Espionage at the Franklin Institute
New Thing- The Spy Exhibit at the Franklin Institute
Inspiration: Sarah Tax & Rob
Time: A few hours
Bottom Line:
Don't trust the umbrella.

Reflection: The Franklin Institute has this really cool exhibit right now featuring all kinds of objects and details about declassified cases from the spy world. Ken, D. and I had a blast learning about spies! Here is the description:

In SPY: The Secret World of Espionage, learn the importance of intelligence gathering and discover how real men and women can change the world every day—one secret at a time. Featuring over 200 historical artifacts and the stories they have to tell—including a collapsible motorbike, a two-man submersible, and a CIA robotic catfish—combined with firsthand spy experiences like personal disguises, voice alteration and navigating through a field of laser beams—find out what it's truly like to be a spy!

The exhibit was a fascinating mix of spy gadgets, history and hands on learning. Definitely worth the Philly traffic!

Day 206: 7/25/13- "Jesus Christ Superstar" for the Feast of St. James

Day 206: 7/25/13- Jesus Christ Superstar for the Feast of St. James
New Thing- Jesus Christ Superstar
Inspiration: Sarah H., Jim Peck, St. James
Time: A few hours
Bottom Line: What's the buzz? Tell me what's a-happening.

All cast pictures courtesy of Muhlenberg College
Judas singing "Superstar"
Reflection: Tonight, I went to see the Muhlenberg College's production of Jesus Christ Superstar which was directed by my friend James Peck! I have seen JCS many times before but this was the best by far. I think what made it so good was that it embraced its musical side (even with it's silly moments like when the apostles sing, "Always hoped that I'd be an apostle, knew that I would make it is I tried. Then when we retire we can write the Gospels and they'll all talk about us when we die." That line gets me ever time.) but then helped it to reach believable depths that other productions cannot always achieve.

One of the things that set this version apart was the choreography. The cast danced very intensely for most of the play when ever there were moments of extreme joy or pain. It was like watching the Gospel of Mark with its fast pace immediacy and urgency of Jesus' life and death. At the end, the cast danced at the foot of the cross in what was clearly a bodily representation of lament. Yet, then they took the same movements of the triumphant beginning when they were haling Jesus as the Messiah and changed them into the dramatic movement of what it must have felt like to feel that joy turn to defeat.  Well done!

Day 205: 7/24/13- The Feast of Thomas 'a Kempis

Day 205: 7/24/13- The Feast of Thomas 'a Kempis
New Thing- Read "Appreciating God's Grace" from Thomas 'a Kempis' The Imitation of Christ
Inspiration: The Feast of Thomas 'a Kempis
Time: About 10 minuets
Bottom Line: Humbling- which is the point.

Reflection: Today is the feast day of the infinitely quotable Thomas 'a Kempis who was a priest, monk and writer. His most famous work is The Imitation of Christ which is a jewel of the canon. If you have not read it, you can find the whole thing on line here. Since it has been years since I read it, I chose to re-read his small section from Book Two entitled "Appreciating God's Grace" since Grace will be St. David's theme this fall and I am getting back to work today. So of course, here was the first line:

Why do you look for rest when you were born to work? Resign yourself to patience rather
than to comfort, to carrying your cross rather than to enjoyment.
OK- I get it! Vacation's over! But seriously, he goes on to talk about the need for humility and thankfulness in receiving God's GRACE. It is truly worth the read and the ponder.
Here are some more thoughts from this section:
God does well in giving the grace of consolation, but man does evil in not returning everything gratefully to God. Thus, the gifts of grace cannot flow in us when we are ungrateful to the Giver, when we do not return them to the Fountainhead. Grace is always given to him who is duly grateful, and what is wont to be given the humble will be taken away from the proud.

Day 204: 7/23/13- Sky Lanterns

Day 204: 7/23/13- Sky Lanterns
New Thing- Set off Sky Lanterns
Inspiration: Longport
Time: About a half an hour
Bottom Line: Magical

These are bigger then they look-almost as large as D.

Reflection: In honor of our last night at the beach, we set off sky lanterns over the ocean. Our first 3 attempts were less than perfect. But the last two were wonderful. D. said a prayer to send to God on each one and it was magical to watch them float out to sea. And no worries, they are 100% biodegradable. Ah, making memories.

Day 203: 7/22/13- The Feast of St. Mary Magdalene on the Beach

Day 203: 7/22/13- The Feast of St. Mary Magdalene on the Beach
New Thing- DIY Green-Tea Mist on the Beach
Inspiration: Longport, St. Mary Magdalene
Time: A few seconds to make and hours of enjoyment
Bottom Line: Refreshing

Mary covered in her trademark red curly hair- the mark of a prostitute. Yes, I chose the weirdest picture I could find!
Reflection: Today is the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene who is known as the Myrrh bearer because she is traditionally described as one who annointed Our Lord's feet with ointment from an alabaster box and then wiped His feet with her hair (John 11:1-45, c.f. Luke 7:36-50) and that she anointed them again (with ointment made of spikenard, kept in an alabaster box) in Bethany, just before the Last Supper, an act about which Our Lord said, "...she is come beforehand to anoint my body for burial. Amen, I say to you, wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, that also which she hath done, shall be told for a memorial of her." (Matthew 26:6-13, Mark 14:1-9, John 12:1-8) Also because she, the "other Mary," and Salome went to annoint Our Lord's Body on the morning of the Resurrection, found the tomb empty, and met the risen Christ Who said to her, "Do not touch me ("Noli me tangere"), for I am not yet ascended to my Father. But go to My brethren, and say to them: I ascend to My Father and to your Father, to My God and your God. " This mission given to her by Christ thereby made her an "Apostle to the Apostles." (Matthew 28:1-10, Mark 16:1-11, Luke 24:1-10, John 20:1-18)

Thus, one of the traditions associated with Mary's Feast is to make fragrant ointments which I tried to do, but the local natural food store didn't have what I needed. So, moving on to Plan B, I made something as equally good for the skin: green tea cooling spray.

Here are the details found here:
DIY Green Tea mist for beach + pool
  • 1-2 green tea bags
  • 1-2 cups cold, cold water
  • steep green tea in cold water for 2 hours
  • add ice
  • put in spray bottle
  • keep cool
This DIY mist will do a few great things:
  • spray antioxidants straight onto your face, take that oxidants!
  • cool you off
  • refresh you
  • repair sun damage
  • make you look smart
D. and I loved this on the beach! Definitely a win.

Day 202: 7/21/13- Sunprint Kit

Day 202: 7/21/13- Sunprint Kit
New Thing- Sunprint Kit
Inspiration: Longport!
Time: We had fun with this for about 30 mins. before we had to move inside.
Bottom Line: Art from the Sun

"Beachcomber Pilgrim"

Reflection: Today, D. and I made sun art using "Sunprints" and found objects we collected on the beach. We loved this and made several. I think we got the hang of it at the end and will make more tomorrow. The above piece, entitled Beachcomber Pilgrim was made with two pieces of calcified coral, several shells, sea glass, and the cross from my pilgrims necklace that I wore to Wales. I had never used this before, but it really captivating.

Here is a little about Sunprints from their website:

Since 1975, the Sunprint Kit has provided fun, learning and creative stimulation for the curious of all ages. Originally developed as a teaching tool by educators at the Lawrence Hall of Science on the UC Berkeley campus, all proceeds from the sale of Sunprint Kits continue to aid our mission to inspire and foster the learning of science and mathematics for all. When placed in the sun, two crucial molecules in the paper are interacting, forming a new molecule. Their interaction is initiated by specific wavelengths of ultra-violet light. The new molecule is colorless so that as the blue molecules are converted, the white of the paper base begins to show through. Areas of the paper covered by your objects still contain the original blue molecule, so they remain blue. When this step is complete, the paper is submerged in water. There are two exciting things happening to the paper while it is underwater. First, the original blue compound is water soluble, so that when you immerse it in the bath, the water carries it away, leaving only the white paper base in those areas. Second, the colorless compound whose formation was caused by the sun’s energy is not water soluble, so it cannot wash away in the water bath. It is sensitive to the water in another way. Just as the Sun’s light stimulated a chemical change in the previous step, the water stimulates another chemical change in this one. The water causes an oxidation reaction that turns the colorless compound into the deep blue of a finished Sunprint.

New Thing- Beach Run and Herbal Water
Inspiration: Longport!
Time: Longer than it should of thanks to the heat
Bottom Line: Hot and thirsty.

Longport on the beach.

Reflection: I slept WAY in this morning and as a consequence, missed being able to go for my run a time when the temperature beach less resembled that of the sun's. But, run I did and it was still nice to be on the beach. I did push-ups on the old peer above.

When I got back in, I cooled down with new Ayala's Organic Herbal water in ginger lemon peel flavor. I don't know if it was the heat or the water, but it was the tops. Also, the ginger let me drink the whole cool drink down at once without hurting my stomach. I learned that trick in the Little House Books. ;)

Day 197: 7/16/13- Finish "Inside of a Dog"

Day 197: 7/16/13- Finish Inside of a Dog
New Thing- Finish Inside of a Dog
Inspiration: Dogs
Time: A few weeks (I had to put it down while I was writing)
Bottom Line: "
Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read."
-Groucho Marx

Reflection: I finally finished reading a really interesting book by Alexandra Horowitz called "Inside of a Dog." Here is the description: "The answers will surprise and delight you as Alexandra Horowitz, a cognitive scientist, explains how dogs perceive their daily worlds, each other, and that other quirky animal, the human. Horowitz introduces the reader to dogs’ perceptual and cognitive abilities and then draws a picture of what it might be like to be a dog." I really learned alot about man's best friend and I want to share my favorite excerpt:

“Dogs make up for their dearth of cones [that let eyes see color] with a battery of rods, the other kind of photoreceptor in the retina. Rods fires mot in low-light situations and at changes in light densities, which is seen as motion.  In the human eye, rods cluster at the periphery, helping us notice something moving out of the corner of our vision, or when cones slow their firing at dusk or night. The density of rods in dogs’ eyes varies, but they have as much as three-times as many rods as we do…

One could say that dogs see the world faster than we do, but what they really do is just see a bit more would in every second. We marvel at dog’s seemingly magical skill at catching a Frisbee on the fly, or following a rapidly bouncing ball…dogs actually see the Frisbee’s, or the ball’s, new location a fractions of a second before we do. Our eyes are internally blinking in those milliseconds that a flung Frisbee is moving along its course toward our heads.

Neurosciencetists have identified an unusual brain disorder in some humans called “akinetopsia,” Theses akinetopsics have a kind of motion blindness: They have difficulty integrating a sequence of images into the normal perception of motion. A person with akinetopsia may begin pouring a cup of tea and then not register a change until many images later, but which time the cup is overflowing. As non-brain-damaged persons are to akinetopsic, dogs are to us; they see the interstices between our moments. We must always see a little slow. Our responses to the world are a split second behind the dogs."  pg. 131-132
What intrigued me about this was the implications of another creature "seeing a bit more world in every second" then we do. How awesome is that?! If a dog sees time and the things that are moving through it in a different way, think about what that means for God?! I am not suggesting that God has something as simple as creture-like eyes, but it stands to reason that if a dog can see where a ball is going a fraction of a second before we can, what more can God see? I feel a sermon coming on!

Day 196: 7/15/13- Moonrise Kingdom

Day 196: 7/15/13- Moonrise Kingdom
New Thing- Watch Moonrise Kingdom
Inspiration: Ken
Time: A few hours
Bottom Line: If you like Wes Anderson movies, then this will be your cup of idiosyncratic tea!

Reflection: Ken and I watched the new Wes Anderson film Moonrise Kingdom which had all his favorite players, nostalgic costumes, sets and props, and his trade mark punchy dialogue and deep characters. The film followed a pair of young lovers who flee their New England town, which causes a local search party to fan out and find them. Personally, I love his work and though this was great.

Day 195: 7/14/13- Finish the Last Two Chapters!

Day 195: 7/14/13- Finish the Last Two Chapters!
New Thing- Finish the Last Two Chapters!
Inspiration: DMin
Time: Many, Many hours
Bottom Line: All work and no play makes Hilly a dull girl.

Reflection: An unedited part of my last chapter:
If The Ministry of Reconciliation was given to us through Christ’s atoning action on the cross, and the Church is Christ’s Body on earth, it stands to wonder: why is the church not being the ultimate Ambassadors of Reconciliation for the world. If we have a pathway to freedom from shame, fear, sin and death through the ministry of reconciliation—why are we letting it be our best kept secret?! If, as we hear all to often from heralds of the church’s demise, the church is diminishing in relevancy, would not this gateway to peace and God be more relevant now then ever? As we saw in this project, people who were simply taught about the Rite of Reconciliation (let alone those who actually experience) had their lives changed. Yet, before that, they had never even head of its existence.
So what is stopping us from calming this ministry and grace for God and for his children? Perhaps it is the same thing that we discovered kept so many of our congregants away from seeing Reconciliation: shame —the shame of corporate sin in this case. The modern church has, in many ways become crippled by its deference to secular institutions such as the psychological sciences. As stated before, psychology can be very life giving, but it cannot offer the full pardon of God’s mercy. Only God can do that. Yet, priests, including myself, are often quick to send people out of our offices to see “professional help” rather then offer Reconciliation of a Penitent. Admittedly, there are times when that is the absolute correct response since healing of the soul easily cannot happen when the mind and body are suffering. However, sometimes this is not the case and the Rite would be a perfectly acceptable pastoral offering.
Again, what it is that keeps us from being the Ambassadors of Reconciliation that we are called to be? What are we ashamed of, Church? That we are not worthy to hear other’s confessions since our sins of indifference, intolerance and injustice loom so large that admitting them would make us to vulnerable?
We are Christ’s Body—we are called to be vulnerable on behalf of the world just as he was made lowly and vulnerable on the cross on our behalf. We need fear not because in that very vulnerability, he has shown us just how certain his love is. Love for those who come to the church looking for forgiveness and for the Church herself. So proclaim mercy and pardon we must if we hope to remain true to our call to extend the Ministry of Reconciliation.

Inspiration: Ken
Time: Several Hours
Bottom Line: "This is just a modern rock song" (They actually did not play this song much to the chagrin of the drunk woman next to me who kept calling that title out in some kind of misguided attempt to get the back to play it.)

Reflection: Tonight, Ken, Travis, Trish and I went to see our favorite band Belle and Sebastian in concert for our anniversary. They. Rocked! We were really close as well and we loved the Mann. Great night had by all.

Inspiration: Thesis, Elaine
Time: Half an hour
Bottom Line: Good way to wake the brain back up

Reflection: You may remember a few weeks ago when I attempted to start writing my thesis and then the sky keep falling. Well, I am back at it today with my partner-in-thesis-writing, Elaine. We are going to try and do recess style study breaks to keep out brains fresh and our imaginations going. The first one today consisted of a really lovely walk and the creation of some chalk drawings in the parking-lot. Good clean fun. I do think it helped to keep me focused in the later part of the day.

Time: A few great hours
Bottom Line: God bless this sweet child!

Reflection: Today I had the distinct honor of become the godmother of the beautiful little L. L. is the brand new baby girl of Debbie and Julius. I have know Debbie for almost half my life and to be with her and her family today was so very special. I was so happy and joyous to make promises of love and faithfulness for L. and will do my best to be a worth godmother to her. She is in my prayer and heart and I ask God to lead her in paths of wisdom and love of Him all the days of her life. The service was celebrated at New Life in Christ Church in Malaga, NJ and you can watch Bishop Simmon's message there by following the link. He is L.'s grandfather and the leader of the church. He welcomed me to sit with him and the other elders and help to serve at communion and say a word to the congregation. It was such so welcoming and hospitable and I hope to be back with this family very soon. What a blessed day.

Time: A few seconds
Bottom Line: That Ben is a good sport.

Reflection: Before my Dad remarried, I never had a little brother to give a classic nuggie to. And then my step-brother Ben came into my life that that has all changed! While we were out visiting the family for Dad's birthday (yeah Dad!), Ben was gracious to let me give him one. For those who may not be associated with this classic sibling prank, here is the definition:

nuggie: A form of punishment used to assert dominance in a social structure, usually given when a lower person does or says something stupid or annoying. It consists of rubbing of the knuckles hard against the skull to cause moderate pain. Usually the head is held stable with the weaker arm, and the nuggie is given by the stronger arm.
Scarlett tackled her younger brother, grabbed him by the head and gave him a nuggie.
It seems like this is something that only little brother receive from their older siblings. It was very fun and we bonded. It was my first nuggie, but Ben could, sadly, not say the same. Love you Ben!
