Day 364: 12/31/13- Bad Movie Night and Yesterday's Tree Climb

Day 364: 12/31/13- Bad Movie Night and Yesterday's Tree Climb
New Thing: Bad Movie Night and Yesterday's Tree Climb
Inspiration: A cool tree in Valley Forge Park, Fireproof, Travis, Trish, Ken
Time: Several hours
Bottom Line: Good times will be had by all.

Reflection: I forgot to mention in yesterday's post that I found a really great climbing tree yesterday on my run in Valley Forge Park. I climbed pretty far and had an excellent view. Noteworthy enough to get a mention.

For today's new thing, we are having a New Year's Even celebration with our friend's Travis and Trish. We will be viewing (and riffing on) Fireproof for a revival of our "bad movie night." This delightful tradition (which was started before Ken and I were married) is where we watch bad movies and, well, make fun of them. I have never actually seen Fireproof, but it has the most important quality for a bad movie candidate: it takes itself really seriously and thus becomes unintentionally funny.  Perfect way to spend New Year's Eve!

Day 363: 12/30/13- Last Ever Live Mystery Science Theater Show (Cinematic Titanic)

Day 363: 12/30/13- Last Ever Live Mystery Science Theater Show (Cinematic Titanic)
New Thing: Attend the last ever live MST3K show
Inspiration: Ken, MST3K
Time: Several hours
Bottom Line: Plenty of Torgo jokes.

The lighting wasn't great which is to be expected.
Reflection: Tonight, Ken, Morgan, Brooke and I headed down to the Keswick Theater for the last ever live performance of Cinematic Titanic which is made up of the original MST3K crew. Here is the group's description from their website:

CINEMATIC TITANIC is the new feature-length movie riffing show from the creator and original cast of MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000. Like MST3K, the show was created by JOEL HODGSON and features the same team that first brought the Peabody award winning cult-classic series to life: TRACE BEAULIEU (Crow, Dr. Forrester), J. ELVIS WEINSTEIN (Tom Servo, Dr. Erhardt), FRANK CONNIFF (TV's Frank), and MARY JO PEHL (Pearl Forrester). Cinematic Titanic continues the tradition of riffing on 'the unfathomable', 'the horribly great', and the just plain 'cheesy' movies from the past.

Ken and I are HUGE MST3K fans, so this was an absolute delight. They cracked wise on two full films: The Wasp Woman and The Doll Squad. They were both terrible, but the jokes were outstanding. We were literally laughing for hours. Nice!

And since life happens when you least expect it, Heyday automatically chronicles the places you go and the things you see so you’ll never forget a meaningful place or moment again.

New Thing:  Christmas Eve Surprise
Inspiration: Annie, Ali, Doug, and Mom
Time: A few hours
Bottom Line: Surprise!

Reflection: Christmas Eve! Before I went into the six services of Christmas Eve (all beautiful), we had a visit from Ali (in full elf costume, complete with a musical dancing hat), Doug, and Mom. That would have been fun enough, but the fun really took off when our friend, Annie, showed up as a surprise for Mom. She was beside herself and we all had delicious BBQ to celebrate. Nice!

Day 356: 12/23/13- Homemade Baby Wipes

Day 356: 12/23/13- Homemade Baby Wipes
New Thing:  DIY Baby Wipes
Inspiration: Pinterest
Time: A few mins.
Bottom Line: Pretty good.

Reflection: Made some DIY baby wipes today. Here is are the directions from this site:

What you need:
  • 1 roll Bounty (must be Bounty – I tried another brand against my friend’s advice and they were terrible)
  • A very sharp knife or an electric knife works best
  • 1 T. baby wash
  • 1 T. coconut oil (you can use other oils but coconut has lots of good benefits so it’s a good choice)
  • 1 C. water (make sure it is hot if you’re using coconut oil so it’ll melt)
  • 1 container the appropriate size to house the wipes
Remove the cardboard roll inside the paper towels and cut the remaining paper towels in half.  (as noted below by Amber, you can leave the roll in there and remove it as the final step…which ever works best for you)

Mix the baby wash, oil, & hot water around to make sure the wash and oil are evenly distributed.

Pour the mixture into your wipes container.

Add the cut paper towels and let sit for about an hour until all the liquid spreads throughout the paper towels.

Pull wipes from center.

This year, D. was an angel and my favorite part was when she held up her candle over the head of the wise man who stood in front of her to make sure she was still seen. Love that girl!

Day 350: 12/17/13- Full Moon Yoga Day
New Thing: Full Moon Yoga Day
Inspiration: Yoga, Moon Day, Amy
Time: About 30 mins.
Bottom Line: Seeking balance

Revolved half moon
Reflection: As you know, I am endeavoring on a great journey to become a yoga teacher. The training has been amazing so far and I am so excited about where it will lead. On of the things that we are encouraged to do is to learn more about the yogi lifestyle on our own as part of our education. One of the topics I have been looking into are "moon days." Here is Yoga Journal's explanation:

You may be familiar with the caution "Avoid practicing yoga on the full or new moon!" This tradition of observing "moon days" stems from the belief in the Ashtanga system that practicing at either extreme of the lunar cycle leaves you vulnerable to injury. One theory is that because the body consists mainly of water, you are affected, like the ocean's tides, by the moon: On full-moon days the pull of the moon is so strong that your prana (life force) moves upward, leaving you feeling headstrong and liable to push yourself beyond your limits; on new-moon days, the pull of the moon is so diminished that you find yourself lacking motivation. The ultimate time to practice, then, is during the middle of the lunar cycle, when the moon is a half circle and your prana is balanced.

Typically, you are not to practice on full or new moon days, but today, I was feeling especially tight and decided to try yoga journal's abbreviated series of themes and variation of "half moon" pose found here. It was just the light practice I needed.

Day 349: 12/16/13- Hush in the Rush

Day 349: 12/16/13- Hush in the Rush
New Thing: Hush in the Rush at the Gryphon Cafe
Inspiration: St. David's, Advent, Rushing
Time: About two hours
Bottom Line: A hush in the crazy rush

Reflection: This year, we tried something totally different for a community to offer the community. Here is the e-message I wrote about it:

Jesus said to them, ‘Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.’ For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.
-Mark 6:31
On Monday, the Discipleship Commission took to the streets of Wayne to bring a “Hush in the Rush” to those in need of a quiet respite with God during the Advent business. Several members of St. David’s meet at the upper room of the Gryphon Café to fill it with candlelight, music, and silent prayer. However, it was not simply a time for the committee members alone to experience the peace that comes from quiet -time spent with the Lord. Rather, it was an open opportunity for anyone—St. David’s member or not— to answer Jesus’s call found in Mark 6:31 to “come a way to a deserted place…and rest awhile.” This call is especially important during Advent when we are preparing for the coming of the Messiah.
To help extend this invitation, several of us handed out free coffee vouchers to customers and pedestrians on the street. This marked a significant change in the program which had traditionally been a time of quiet in the Chapel. As nice as the original Hush in the Rush had been, it wasn’t really reflecting the need that we all have to be lifted out of the mad rush of the session for Sabbath-hush. As the Church, it is important to bring that invitation to peace outside of our walls into the world where the rush is even more pronounced.
The good news is that many people responded to this invitation with thanks and relief for a quite place they could retreat to for a moment. What surprised me, however, was how many more people refused the offer to take time out of their hectic lives –even for a few minuets— to rest in God’s presences. Most people said that they were just to busy.
How about you? We are less then a week away from Christmas which is God’s ultimate invitation to be in relationship with him. After all, it is at Christmas when we are reminded that Jesus who is Emmanuel—God with us—came into this world to be with us and we with him. At Christmas we are reminded that there is nothing that he desires more then to be a part of our lives and offer us the peace that comes through knowing him. Have you taken time to truly sit and be with him his season? Do you have plans to come to one of the pageants or Christmas Eve or Morning services to make a place for him amidst the rush of the world’s distractions? Let us pray that this Christmas we do not let our business stand in the way of our belief in God’s love for us. Let us offer the hush of our hearts in the face of all the rush. May God bless you richly this Christmastide!

I kind of did that for the office (see above) but I used a lantern instead of lighting my head on fire.

D. also had her sweet winter play today! Adorable!

Day 343: 12/10/13- Karl Barth Sermon

Day 343: 12/10/13- Karl Barth Sermon
New Thing: Karl Barth Sermon
Inspiration: Barth's Feast Day
Time: A few well spend mins.
Bottom Line: Saved by Grace.

Reflection: Today is Karl Barth's proposed feast day. Since he is one of the most influential theologians in my life, I decided to read one of his sermons that I had yet to read. This sermon is titled “Saved by Grace” preached by Karl Barth to inmates of the prison at Basel, Switzerland on August 14, 1955. It can be found in its entirety here, and this is a beautiful selection:

But now listen.  Into the depth of our predicament the word is spoken from on high: By grace you have been saved!  To be saved does not just mean to be a little encouraged, a little comforted, a little relieved.  It means to be pulled out like a log from a burning fire.  You have been saved!  We are not told: you may be saved sometimes, or a little bit.  No, you have been saved, totally for all times.  You?  Yes, we!  Not just any other people, more pious and better than we are, no we, each one of us.
This is so because Jesus Christ is our brother and, through his life and death, has become our Saviour who has wrought our salvation.  He is the word of God for us.  And this word is: By grace you have been saved!

Time: A few mins.
Bottom Line: Do the bees a favor- plant some flowers.

Reflection: Today is St. Ambrose's Feast Day. Ambrose is the patron saint of bees and bee keepers. Here is part of his legend:

There is a legend that as an infant, a swarm of bees settled on his face while he lay in his cradle, leaving behind a drop of honey. His father considered this a sign of his future eloquence and honeyed tongue. For this reason, bees and beehives often appear in the saint's symbology.

To honor his patronage, I watched the following TED talk which talks about the plight of bees. Plant flowers please!

Day 334: 12/1/13- St. Lydia's Dinner Church
New Thing: Dinner Church at St. Lydia's
Inspiration: Advent One, Emily, Rachael, Kara and Lindsay
Time: Several Hours
Bottom Line: This was really great!

Reflection: Tonight, I took a train to Brooklyn (yes, I am a jet-setter ;) to visit St. Lydia's Dinner Church which was founded by two of my Yale Div. buddies: Rachel and Emily! Here is their description:

St. Lydia's is a Dinner Church. We gather every Sunday and Monday night to cook and share a sacred meal, just as the first followers of Jesus did. We eat, explore scripture, offer prayers, and sing together. Tied to the Lutheran and Episcopal traditions, our worship is rooted in the patterns of the Early Church. We are a progressive congregation in New York City, located in the Gowanus/Park Slope neighborhoods in Brooklyn. St. Lydia's is an experiment in what the Church might be when the meal we share is at the center of our common life. We're building this together—come and join us!

It was such a lovely night of prayer, song and food. It was made even more special by sharing it with Kara and Lindsay! I love and miss you guys! Even though you smell, Kara! The only down side was when I missed my train home. whoops!
