Day 333: 11/30/11- Feeding Ministry at St. John's

Day 333: 11/30/11
New Thing:
Feeding Ministry at St. John's
Inspiration: St. David's Staff, St. John's
Cost: $0
Time: A few hours
Bottom Line: Felt like home!

Reflection: Today the staff went out to St. John's to cook and serve lunch at their soup kitchen. Now, working in a soup kitchen is not exactly new for me (since Trinity had one Monday thru Friday) but it is always gratifying to be serving others in a really concrete way. I am also really happy to be on a staff that cares so much about mission that they would take time from their schedules to help those in need.

Day 332: 11/29/11- Celebrate Little D.'s 4th Birthday!!

Day 332: 11/29/11
New Thing:
Celebrate Little D.'s 4th Birthday!!
Inspiration: Delia
Cost: $??
Time: 4 years
Bottom Line: This blows my mind.

Picture taken almost 4 years ago by the talented Kara.
Reflection: Today is Little D.'s 4th birthday. I can barely believe it. I decided to fast today in her honor (a full fast- not just the Advent no-sugar fast) to remind me to constantly give thanks for the gift of her in our lives and to pray for her walk with God. I am planning on making this an annual tradition.

We had a nice visit from Bill and my Mom and our friend Annie (btw- thanks for the awesome presents, Mom!). And then she and I went to a make-your-own-pottery store for the first time. I had never been to one of these and I was very impressed! D. made a Snow White (naturally) and I painted a cat that she chose for me. It was lovely. It has been the best 4 years of my life thanks to our Little Peanut and the love that she has brought into it.

Day 331: 11/28/11- Celebrate my Baptismal Anniversary with Baptism Meditation Walk

Day 331: 11/28/11
New Thing:
Celebrate my Baptismal Anniversary with Baptism Meditation Walk
Inspiration: Holy Baptism, Advent, Anne
Cost: $0
Time: 29 year of grace
Bottom Line: Gratitude.

Reflection: Today is the 29th Anniversary of my Baptism! I took lots of chances today to thank God for the greatest gift of my life, being Baptized by the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and being marked as Christ's own forever. My favorite meditation today was a gift from my dear friend, Anne K. I have had the pleasure of working with Anne on a series of Baptismal meditations, retreats, and leader materials and I used her Walking Meditation as my prayer guide today. Thanks, Anne, for helping me mark this Holy Day in my life. You are a part of that Church Family that I am blessed to be a member of by virtue of my Baptism. Thank be to God for a lifetime of grace.

Day 330: 11/27/11- Make a Giant Advent Wreath (and a Small One)

Day 330: 11/27/11
New Thing:
Make a Giant Advent Wreath (and a Small One)
Inspiration: Advent Week One
Cost: Alot
Time: Several weeks in the making.
Bottom Line: People look East, the time is near....

Reflection: Today is the first Sunday of Advent. Here is the Wiki description of this wonderful season:

Advent (from the Latin word adventus meaning "coming") is a season observed in many Western Christian churches, a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas.Latin adventus is the translation of the Greek word parousia, commonly used in reference to the Second Coming of Christ. For Christians, the season of Advent serves as a reminder both of the original waiting that was done by the Hebrews for the birth of their Messiah as well as the waiting of Christians for Christ's return.

One of the highlights was putting the finishing touches on a giant walking advent wreath meditation that we created in the balcony of St. David's narthex. I created large posters with meditations based on the Advent Hymn, People Look East which is my favorite. The we draped large pieces of cloth over the edge to look like giant candles. It is hard to explain, but hopefully peaceful to participate in.

At home, we also made our own traditional wreath for our table and we were blessed to light it for the first time with the wonderful Ellyn, Andrew and their crew! It was so good to see them and I felt refreshed for the whole night. We love you guys!

Also, I have decided to go on another sugar fast for Advent. I really felt that it helped me to center more when I tried it this summer. And since, in Advent, we are called to try and find stillness, I thought it would be the prefect time to try this again. I am also starting a few new devotional practices that I will be writing more about.

Day 329: 11/26/11- Pink Champagne Cake

Day 329: 11/26/11
New Thing:
Pink Champagne Cake
Inspiration: Kim's Bridal Shower
Cost: $0
Time: A few hours
Bottom Line: A delicious way to celebrate.

Reflection: Today, we headed to Reading for my soon-to-be-sister-in-law's bridal shower. Besides wishing Kim well, one of the highlights with the huge cake that Connie supplied. I believe it is from the same bakery who will be making their 4 or 5 flavored (is that right, Kim?) wedding cake and this was a little preview. This was three flavored and with most exotic of these being pink champagne. It was very good, and I do believe that I will be sampling the other flavors with pleasure soon (I think cappuccino and coconut are among them.)

Day 328: 11/25/11- "The Muppets"

Day 328: 11/25/11
New Thing:
The Muppets
Inspiration: The Muppets
Cost: $20ish
Time: A few hours
Bottom Line: Hi Ho!

Reflection: I am, and always have been, a huge Muppet fan. I can remember vividly crying at the death of Jim Henson even though I was only eight at the time. I confess that the one profession that might be able to lure me away form working in the Church would be Muppeteer. So, I was so excited to see that they were going to be re-launching these beloved characters.

The movie was a blast and there is alot to love if you are a long-time fan. They bring back numbers and themes that are staples while still introducing these characters to a new audience, all while singing and and and dancing! We all loved it.

Day 327: 11/24/11-Organic Thanksgiving At Our New House!!

Day 327: 11/24/11
New Thing:
Organic Thanksgiving At Our New House!!
Inspiration: Thanksgiving, Eco-Stewardship
Cost: $?
Time: All Day
Bottom Line: There is so much to give thanks for!

Ken with his contribution (bread), Ali with her "stiffin' muffins," D. with her 'tude, and me with the bird. (Note Anne's Book ;)
Reflection: Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Today we had our first T-Day celebration in our new place. I started the day with a beautiful run, followed by a lovely service at the Old Church with little D. It was really nice to be able to actually sit and worship with her. Then we started the cooking (and I own Connie a huge thanks you for the awesome turkey) and were joined by Ali and Doug. Our whole meal this year was organic as a way to be good stewards of the wonderful bounty that God has given us. It was so very delicious and we are now so full. As I write this, Ali, Doug and Winni (one of their dogs) are asleep on the couch, April (dog #2) is asleep on the floor, D, is asleep upstairs and Ken and I are watching Spinal Tap. All is well with the world. Thank you, God!

Day 326: 11/23/11- Drink Synergy

Day 326: 11/23/11
New Thing:
Drink Synergy
Inspiration: Thanksgiving Shopping
Cost: $3
Time: About an hour
Bottom Line: It was strange to drink "Synchronized Energy"

Reflection: Today was crazy busy. After making a few pastoral calls at the end of the day, I headed over to the Whole Foods to do my last minuet Thanksgiving Dinner Shopping. It was--predictably--a madhouse. By the end of it, I found myself in the fancy hippy drink aisle and thought it might be a good way to try something new. I challenged myself to find the most pretentious drink there, and the winner was "Synergy" (above) because it had the most philosophies printed on its label.  It was not only raw, organic, all natural, naturally anti-bacterial/anti-fungal (what??), low in carbohydrates, low calorie, naturally rejuvenating, vegan and kosher, but it also had a Gandhi quote. All this with a blend of tangy raspberries, tart lemons and spicy ginger. That's quite a lot for one little bottle. It was pretty good, but I am afraid I did not reach Nirvana by drinking it.

Day 325: 11/22/11- Pomegranate Acai Tart Frozen Yogurt

Day 325: 11/22/11
New Thing:
Pomegranate Acai Tart Frozen Yogurt
Inspiration: Staff Lunch, National Pomegranate Month
Cost: $0
Time: About 20 mins.
Bottom Line: I'm loving National Pomegranate Month

Reflection: Today we had a delicious staff lunch which ended with fantastic frozen yogurt. I tried a new flavor, Pomegranate Acai Tart, in honor of National Pomegranate Month. Here is the tantalizing description:

A mixture of pomegranate, blueberry, and acai (ah-sigh-ee) is sure to send a zing to your taste buds. Combine this flavor with fresh berry toppings and chocolate and you won’t be disappointed.

No, I was not disappointed.

Day 324: 11/21/11- Visit the Magnolia Tribute Garden

Day 324: 11/21/11
New Thing:
Visit the Magnolia Tribute Garden
Inspiration: DioPA Visit
Cost: $0
Time: about 15 mins.
Bottom Line: A little slice of beauty.

Reflection: Today I visited the Diocesan Offices in Philly today for a meeting and discovered a little park that I had never seen before.  It is the Magnolia Tribute Garden and here is a description:

On the south side of Locust Street is the Magnolia Tribute Garden. There is no more quiet or restful spot in Philadelphia than this beautifully balanced park. A gentle stream of water reaches skyward from the fountain. Benches for the elderly, for readers seeking quiet or for a mother with a sleeping child flank the paths. Over the wall can be seen the roofs of houses or an occasional headstone from St. Mary's churchyard beyond. And the sound of birds is heard continually in this lively garden, contributed by the Garden Club of America in honor of the "founders of our nation."

It was a very nice few minuets spent in this little garden which had a marker that said that "George Washington would have appreciated these flowers." If it is good enough for Washington, it's good enough for me!

Bottom Line: Preach it!

Reflection: Well, I have officially preached my first sermon here at St. David's. It was great to be given the opportunity to preach on Christ the King Sunday. If you are so inclined, you can listen to the sermon in a day or so here: http://www.stdavidschurch.org/worship-and-music/worship/sermons

New Thing:
Celebrate National Pomegranate Month
Inspiration: NPM
Cost: $15
Time: 30 mins
Bottom Line: Tasty

Reflection: Today I tried pomegranate juice (which I have never had without another flavor mixed in) as well as a new organic hair product with pomegranate and green tea mix in to help keep fizz down. I loved the juice, and the jury is still out on the hair product. I need a few more times to know if it really works.

Day 319: 11/16/11- Two Funerals and The Orpheus Club

Day 319: 11/16/11
New Thing:
Two Funerals and The Orpheus Club
Inspiration: St. David's
Cost: $0
Time: All Day
Bottom Line: A Foretaste of that Heavenly Banquet

The Graveyard at St. David's
Reflection: Today was really beautiful in many ways. We had two funerals (which is a new record for me) on this very rainy Wednesday (which you may know is my favorite kind of day weather wise) and they were both amazing. The first began with the burial in St. David's graveyard of a very longstanding and active member. As we stood in the rain listening to the droplets on the umbrellas and canopy, the beautiful words of the prayers seemed to really seep into the very air around us. The service that followed was the largest funeral I had ever attended and was a powerful testament to the hope of the Resurrection.

The second funeral was just as stunning and it began with an interment at the cemetery at the Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge. Again, it was powerful to stand in the rain along side the family in their time of need as it always is. Then we all went back to St. David's for the service which featured the amazing Orpheus Club of Philadelphia. The man who's life we were celebrating was a long time member of the Club which was Founded in 1872. The Orpheus Club is the oldest mens' singing group in America and they sang the single most beautiful arrangement of "For All the Saints Who from their Labors Rest" that I have ever heard. I had goosebumps the whole time. Pretty sure that that is the arraignment they sing in heaven.

Then I got to go to my cozy house where Ken had my favorite dinner ready for me and played a little violin with Delia. So awesome.

Day 318: 11/15/11 New Thing: Write the Opening Line of My Autobiography

Day 318: 11/15/11
New Thing:
Write the Opening Line of My Autobiography
Inspiration: This Book Will Change Your Life, My Life
Cost: $0
Time: 2 minuets
Bottom Line: Don't worry, I am not planning on ever writing this.

"Tis a good life..."

Reflection: "I'll go to bed when the police leave," I said at 2:00am the morning of my wedding.

Day 317: 11/14/11- Use a Wall Decal

Day 317: 11/14/11
New Thing:
Use a Wall Decal
Inspiration: New House
Cost: $55
Time: Not sure--but a while.
Bottom Line: Really helps transform a room.

"Mid-Century Gothic" from Blik Wall Decals--This picture is from their website and is not an actually room in our house.
Reflection: Today we hung the above wall cling (found here) in our attic chapel. It looks pretty cool and it helps to transform the space by drawing the eye to the altar area. I just wish the color was a little bolder and that it was slightly easier to hang. But I think we will get another design (maybe a tree) for the bedroom.

Day 316: 11/13/11- Celebrate the Eucharist at St. David's for the First Time

Day 316: 11/13/11
New Thing:
Celebrate the Eucharist at St. David's for the First Time
Inspiration: St. David's
Cost: $0
Time: A little over an hour
Bottom Line: Awe Inspiring.

Reflection: Today was my first Celebration at a Sunday Eucharist here at St. David's! It was really beautiful and I was so grateful that I didn't forget anything (unlike the stress dream I had the night before;).  What a joy and blessing!

Day 315: 11/12/11- Exercise in Faith

Day 315: 11/12/11
New Thing:
Exercise in Faith
Inspiration: St. David's
Cost: $0
Time: A little over an hour
Bottom Line: A great wait to add Spirit to working out.

Reflection: St. David's offers several different exercise classes which are also steeped in prayer and Bible study. Today, I tried out the "Exercises in Faith" boot-camp style camp which was lead by a parishioner who is also a personal trainer. I was pleasantly surprised by both the intensity of the exercises and the attention to prayers it had.  It was refreshing and inspirational!

Day 314: 11/11/11- Martinmas Lantern Walk

Day 314: 11/11/11
New Thing:
Martinmas Lantern Walk
Inspiration: Martinmas
Cost: $0
Time: 30 minuets
Bottom Line: A walk by lantern light with Little D.

Reflection: Today is the Feast of St. Martin of Tours, also know as Martinmas. Here is his story from wikipedia:

While Martin was still a soldier in the Roman army and deployed in Gaul (modern day France), he experienced the vision that became the most-repeated story about his life. One day as he was approaching the gates of the city of Amiens he met a scantily clad beggar. He impulsively cut his own military cloak in half and shared it with the beggar. That night, Martin dreamed of Jesus wearing the half-cloak he had given away. He heard Jesus say to the angels: "Here is Martin, the Roman soldier who is not baptized; he has clad me." In another story, when Martin woke, his cloak was restored, and the miraculous cloak was preserved among the relic collection of the Merovingian kings of the Franks.
Small temporary churches were built for the relic and people began to refer to them by the word for little cloak "capella" that these churches housed. Eventually small churches lost their association with the cloak and all small churches began to be referred to as Chapels.
The dream confirmed Martin in his piety, and he was baptized at the age of 18. He served in the military for another two years until, just before a battle with the Gauls at Borbetomagus (now Worms, Germany) in 336, Martin determined that his faith prohibited him from fighting, saying, "I am a soldier of Christ. I cannot fight." He was charged with cowardice and jailed, but in response to the charge, he volunteered to go unarmed to the front of the troops. His superiors planned to take him up on the offer, but before they could, the invaders sued for peace, the battle never occurred, and Martin was released from military service.

Lighting the Lamps
There are tons of customs associated with this feast day, but one of my favorites is the lantern walk that children take all over the world. On this day, people have traditionally made paper lanterns to walk around spreading the warmth of Christ with their light. Well, we didn't have time to make paper lanterns in our house this week, so we used a few of the pretty ones that we have for decoration instead. Little D. and I lit our lamps and strolled in the graveyard where I told her the story of St. Martin. The we went into the old church and put out lanterns on the alter while we said a quick prayer. It was the perfect way to end the week.

Day 313: 11/10/11- Teaching Little D. to Meditate

Day 313: 11/10/11
New Thing:
Teaching Little D. to Meditate
Inspiration: The Rhythm of Family
Cost: $0
Time: About 10 minuets
Bottom Line: Mostly Peaceful

Reflection: Ever since Delia was born, Ken and I have really tried to make prayer a part of our family's daily rhythm. And on the whole, I think we to a pretty good job. However, the praying that we do together is always out loud and extroverted. Lately, I have been wondering if we are giving her enough space in our prayer time to be silent and listen to God in stillness. So, today she and I took the suggestion for family meditation I found in the book The Rhythm of Family. We headed up to the prayer room and sat still for a minuet. Then we tried some breathing techniques on our backs and offered a prayer. She was definitely quieter for longer then I expected and seemed really happy to be trying it out. This seems like a great way to end the day. How do you all help your kids pray? I would love some suggestions.

Day 312: 11/9/11- Chaos Never Dies Day Meditation & Wild Boar

Day 312: 11/9/11
New Thing:
Chaos Never Dies Day Meditation & Wild Boar
Inspiration: CND Day and Staff Lunch
Cost: $0
Time: About two hours for both
Bottom Line: Better learn to live with it.

I am told that this is the Chinese symbol for "Chaos"

Refection: Today I had a great lunch with the Sunday School group at this amazing restaurant called "Nectar." While there, I tried the Wild Boar Lo Mein which was really delicious. Definitely the first boar I have ever had.

Today is also National "Chaos Never Dies" Day. Here is the description found here:

Chaos Never Dies Day recognizes the turmoil in modern, everyday life. Are things a little crazy at home? Is school a little on the wild side? Is your work place hectic and disorderly? We thought so.
Just when things seem to calm down at work and home, along comes something to disrupt your life. Yes, disorder is everywhere. Hectic schedules, changes to plans, unexpected tasks and chores, the list goes on and on and on.......Today is designed for you. It's a day to recognize the chaos in your life. You can best celebrate this day, by recognizing that chaos never dies. Rather, its a way of life. You can partake in this special day, by putting just a little order back into your life. You can start, by picking one thing that is really disrupting your life, and change it...for the good.

With all the changes happening in our lives at the moment, I can certainly relate to the feeling that there is always chaos in our life. And I agree that sometimes the best thing to do is just accept that reality. So, to use this theme as a meditation, I decided to add a little chaos to my prayer life today. I took a pack of 50 some prayer cards that have different meditations, scripture readings, and art on them and threw them into the air. Then I picked up a random one and used that as my prayer guide for the day. It was a very fun way to invite God to stand with me as a rock, a firm foundation. One that can be stood firmly on despite all the chaos swirling around us in our life.

Day 311: 11/8/11- Pumpkin Pasta

Day 311: 11/8/11
New Thing:
Pumpkin Pasta
Inspiration: St. David's
Cost: $0
Time: About half an hour
Bottom Line: Pumpkin Party!

Reflection: Today the staff at St. David's had a really lovely luncheon to celebrate the new website launch  (check it out here) and as a welcome to me. It was delicious and pumpkin themed. All the food was pumpkin based (including a salad with roasted pumpkin squash, pumpkin roll and cupcakes, and pumpkin soup) and they even had pumpkin pasta which was excellent. I felt very welcomed and full!

Day 310: 11/7/11
New Thing:
Start Reading Charlotte's Web to Delia
Inspiration: Delia
Cost: $0
Time: About an hour
Bottom Line: That's "Some Pig!"

The Classic

Reflection: Salutations, dear readers. With out a doubt, Charlotte's Web by the incomparable E.B. White (one of my most loved authors and essayists) is one of my all time favorite books. I cannot count the number of times I have read this book and the copy that I still have is falling apart. Tonight, I started reading this classic to Delia who instantly loved it. The best part was that she actually fell asleep in my arms which she has only really done a handful of times. It was--in a word--terrific.

Day 309: 11/6/11- First Sunday Service at St. David's

Day 309: 11/6/11
New Thing:
First Sunday Service at St. David's
Inspiration: St. David's
Cost: $0
Time: All day
Bottom Line: A beautiful day full of worship!

Reflection: Today was my first taste of Sunday Services here at St. David's. It was amazing. They have four services and all of them were packed. The first was Rite 1 at 8:00am in the historic church built in 1715. This space uses an Eastern facing altar. The building is surrounded by a graveyard and the only electricity it uses if for the A/C, heat and organ. They rest of the lightning comes from candlelight. It is like worshiping in a perfect postcard.

Then we had the huge 9:15 service in the larger space seen above. As we walked in I was stunned to see so many people and the music was transcendent (we even had a brass quartet to celebrate All Saint's Sunday). It was awe inspiring.  There were also five baptisms at this service.

Next came a very lovely coffee hour with a cake for Ken, Delia and I followed by the 11:15 service back in the historic church. This time it was Rite II with music and another baptism. Again, it was wonderful.

Finally, I headed back to the historic church at 5:00 for the last service of the day. With the candlelight and music it was probably the most beautiful of the four. It was a blessing to see the Spirit moving in this place and I am still in awe.

Day 308: 11/5/11- Cassie's Wedding and Attend a Song Bird Competition

Day 308: 11/5/11
New Thing:
Cassie's Wedding and Attend a Song Bird Competition
Inspiration: Cassie and Greg, The 21 Annual Song Bird Contest
Cost: --
Time: All day
Bottom Line: A day full of melodious surprises.

Ready for a wedding!

Reflection: Today was a very banner day. Ali, Doug and I made our way down to Maryland for the wedding of our dear childhood friend, Cassie, to her beloved, Greg. It was so very special to see our dear friend become a wife and it was so awesome to see Kelly, Adam and our other friends! I love you, Cassie!! My God bless you both!

Before the wedding, Ali and I had another fantastic (albeit random) adventure. In the very hotel we were staying at, there happened to be a huge Song Bird Competition. We decided to poke our heads in and we were greeted with a warm welcome from one of the heads of the organization. He taught us all about this 300 year old hobby (for example, the American Singer Canaries, which were the birds at this competition, can sing up to 10 different songs a piece) and even let us into one of the judging sessions where we heard 9 birds vie for the number one spot. It was, at the same time, both relaxing and exciting. So cool!

Day 307: 11/4/11
New Thing:
Tattoo a Banana
Inspiration: This Book Will Change your Life
Cost: $2ish
Time: About 5 mins.
Bottom Line: Taste like art!

Reflection: I had a little fun at lunch time today and tattooed a banana. For those playing along at home, all thou needest to do is use a safety pin and etch a pattern of ones choosing into thine banana peel. Then wait a few minuets and watch it turn into a tattoo like pattern on your snack! Presto-delicious art.

Day 306: 11/3/11
New Thing:
Adopt a Panda!
Inspiration: Pandas
Cost: $25
Time: About 5 mins.
Bottom Line: They are the favorite animals of all the Raining girls.

Reflection: For this month Eco-Stewardship challenge, I symbolically adopted a panda through the World Wildlife Foundation. They are the favorite animal of both Delia and myself. Thus, this seemed to be a nice way to insure that they would be around for the next generation of Raining women.

Time: About an Hour
Bottom Line: Go grateful to all my saints.

Reflection: Today was All Soul's Day following All Saints Day one of the High Holy Days of the church year.  For today's mediation (which I shared with my women's Bible study this week), I focused on the warm memory of all the saints in my life who have helped strengthen my faith in Christ. I am so grateful for those who have been this kind of light for my soul. In the Bible study, we all told stories about these people and offered thanksgiving for them. Who has been a saint in your life?

Reflection: Today was the big day! I had a wonderful day in the office getting to know my co-workers and see a glimpse of the many ministries that happen here. Everyone was extremely nice and gave me such a great welcome. I have to admit that I am pretty tiered after today, but I am very excited to see what tomorrow brings.
